  1. EPIX app arrives on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick The Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick lineup of streaming apps from cable networks is fairly robust these days. So much so that there aren’t too many major networks missing from the platform, so new network apps are rare these days. EPIX has been expected on the platform, after hinting at an upcoming app, and now they’ve finally arrived with an all new Fire TV app. Like so many cable network apps, the new EPIX app does require activation through a TV provider before you can view any of its content, but once activated, the app provides access to a very robust library of movies. EPIX does have a small selection of original shows, but the star of the show is definitely their library of thousands of movies which are all available on demand through the new app. The home screen of the app looks almost identical to the Fire TV’s updated interface. The upper half of the screen is taken up by information and an image of the highlighted content, while the bottom half is full of stacked rows of content in various categories. There are numerous movie groups, like “Most Watched” and “New On EPIX,” to help you find something to watch. You’ll also find curated collections, like “Classic 80s Movies,” and multi-movie series, like Bond and Indiana Jones, on the home screen. Selecting a movie or TV show lets you play the content if the app is activated, watch a trailer, or add it to a watch list. Selecting the “View More” option just gives you a list of the cast and crew in the movie or episode. If you just want to browse the entire catalogue of movies, you can jump into the “See All (A-Z)” area of the app where you’ll find a seemingly never-ending wall of movies and shows to scroll through. The “Live” section of the app lists what’s currently airing on the four EPIX channels: EPIX, EPIX2, EPIX Hits, and EPIX Drive-in. From there you can jump directly to the currently airing movie’s on demand listing to start watching the movie from the beginning. There’s a very basic search function in the app that could certainly be improved with additional search options. It does not appear as though EPIX has integrated their catalogue with the Fire TV’s universal search yet, so you won’t be able to use Alexa or the main Fire TV interface to find content within the EPIX app. In the “Settings” area of the app is oddly where you’ll find your watch queue and watch history. While browsing around the app, you can select to add any movie or series episode to your watch queue, where it’ll be saved for easy access. The settings area also has the usual closed captioning and log out options. The parental controls section just informs you to manage settings on the epix.com website. 3. Report: Amazon Prime Video coming to Apple TV at WWDC, Amazon to resume Apple TV sales Last week Recode reported that Amazon and Apple were actively discussing plans to bring to Apple TV later this year, and now Buzzfeed is reporting that yes, really, it’s happening and the deal is now official. Amazon Prime Video for Apple TV is expected to be introduced on stage at WWDC next month and launch later this summer, according to the report. Amazon has long made Prime Video available through an app on iPhones and iPads, but so far Amazon has resisted creating an app for the fourth-generation Apple TV. The apparent feud between Apple and Amazon started back in 2015when Amazon removed Apple TVs from its online store, citing confusion created by not having an Amazon Prime Video app. At the time, Apple worked privately with companies to add new channels to its TV platform individually and Amazon was pushing its . Apple later released the current Apple TV which runs tvOS and has its own App Store that works like the iPhone and iPad App Store. Amazon has been able to create an app for a while now (and it’s been rumored before). As part of the new agreement, Buzzfeed says that Apple TV sales will resume on Amazon. Apple’s WWDC keynote is scheduled for Monday, June 5 at 10 am PT where we’ll have full coverage all the announcements including iOS 11, macOS 10.13, and even a possible Amazon Echo competitor. Thank You 🙂 And Have A Great Day. The Mixdoctor Team Member of koditalk.org

  6. If the uncovered Silk browser for Fire TV is any indication, Amazon will enable voice input for Fire TV apps in the future. That might still be a long time away, so in the mean time, Amazon has made voice search possible for one of the most popular apps. With the new 5.2.4.1 software update, you can now use voice search to search YouTube on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. Amazon has been slowly expanding the Fire TV’s universal search to cover more and more services over time, with the most recent notable additions being Netflix and HBO. Those, and all other services covered by the Fire TV’s universal search, consist of video catalogs that don’t change on a daily basis. YouTube’s video selection, which literally changes every second, can’t possibly be included in the Fire TV’s universal search implementation. As a substitute for including YouTube content in the Fire TV’s voice search, Amazon has enabled the YouTube app to support the Fire TV’s “Search In Apps” functionality. When you perform a search on the Fire TV, whether it be a voice search or text input search, the results are broken down into various categories, like “Movies & TV” or “Apps & Games.” The final category on the list is “Search In Apps.” Selecting an app in the “Search In Apps” section simply passes your query to the built-in search function inside that specific app. Prior to the 5.2.4.1 software update, only the Amazon Music app supported this functionality. Amazon has now added the YouTube app, which they’ve created themselves, as the second app to allow this search handoff ability. To search YouTube using your voice, just perform a regular voice search using either an Alexa voice remote or the Fire TV Remote app. If there are matches to your search in a service included in the Fire TV’s universal search, those results will be listed first, with the YouTube app icon at the bottom. If there are no matches to your search in the universal catalog, you’ll need to press the menu button to make the “Search In Apps” option appear. Once you select the YouTube app under the “Search In Apps” section, the YouTube app will load directly to its search screen with your query results shown. You can perform another voice search at anytime, but you’ll see the universal search results and will have to select the YouTube app at the bottom each time. While having direct voice input of text fields within all apps is ideal, and hopefully coming to Fire TV devices in the future, this search handoff functionality is a nice substitute for the time being. Hopefully Amazon opens this ability up for developers to implement themselves so more apps can be included.
  7. Amazon Bans Sales of “Pirate” Media Players, Will Destroy Them Amazon is taking a tough stance against vendors who sell fully-loaded Kodi boxes and other “pirate” media players through its platform. The store now explicitly bans media players that “promote” or “suggest” the facilitation of piracy. Sellers who violate this policy, of which there are still a few around, risk having their inventory destroyed. Streaming piracy is on the rise with popular media player Kodi at the center of attention. While Kodi itself is a neutral platform, millions of people use third-party add-ons to turn it into the ultimate pirate machine. In some cases, the pirate add-ons are put onto the devices by vendors, who sell these “fully-loaded” boxes through their own stores or marketplaces such as Amazon. While Amazon has never explicitly allowed the sale of copyright-infringing devices, they are not hard to find in its store. This is a thorn in the side of major copyright holders, who have repeatedly complained about fully-loaded boxes. Amazon appears to be well aware of the controversy, as it recently published an updated policy clarifying that pirate media players are not permitted on the platform. Merely ‘suggesting’ that devices can be used for infringing purposes is enough to have them delisted. “Products offered for sale on Amazon should not promote, suggest the facilitation of, or actively enable the infringement of or unauthorized access to digital media or other protected content. Any streaming media player or other device that violates this policy is prohibited from sale on Amazon,” the company writes. Amazon states that it is up to the vendor to determine whether their products meet these standards. Those who still cross the line are in for an unpleasant and costly surprise. Amazon states that it will destroy the devices without reimbursement. “If you sell these products, we may immediately suspend or terminate your selling privileges and destroy inventory in our fulfillment centers without reimbursement,” Amazon writes. In addition, if there’s proof that the vendors were engaging in illegal activity, any pending payments may be withheld or forfeited under the policy. Amazon While the announcement was published without fanfare, it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Anti-piracy company Irdeto, which works with several major copyright holders on pirate streaming box cases, sees the new policy as a breakthrough. “This first of its kind preventative measure aims to minimize the pirates’ promotional reach. It’s a policy I hope the other e-Commerce sites will emulate,”‎ Mark Mulready, Senior Director Cyber Services and Investigations at Irdeto, notes. Despite Amazon’s strong language the site still features many devices marketed as fully-loaded streaming media players. Some, including the one below, even use pirate sources such as Icefilms, Primewire and the Genesis Kodi add-on to market their products. Amazon According to Irdeto, the media player software itself is not at fault. In a way, they are a victim of the pirates too, much like copyright holders. The pirate sources and the rogue vendors are the ones that create and maintain the problem. This is also reflected in the legal cases that have been launched thus far over the misuse of Kodi players. Both in the UK and the Netherlands, test cases against sellers of “fully-loaded” devices are aiming to stop the phenomenon. In the United States, the problem is also on the radar now. MPAA boss Chris Dodd recently said that finding a solution to the illegal use of Kodi is one of the main piracy questions the industry currently faces, so it’s likely that more enforcement actions will follow. 9. Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick owners in the US have had access to Alexa on their devices for over a year, but the voice assistant hasn’t made an appearance on Fire TV devices overseas yet. That has finally changed with the new 5.2.4.1 software update currently rolling out to all Fire TV models globally. In addition to bringing the new Fire TV user interface to older 1st-generation models, as well as a few other new features, the update adds Alexa to all UK and German Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks. The new 2nd-generation Fire TV Stick will be arriving at people’s doorsteps in the UK tomorrow, and in Germany later this month, with Alexa onboard, but thankfully existing Fire TV and Fire TV Stick owners won’t have to buy a new device to have access to the voice assistant. Once a device receives the 5.2.4.1 software update, the basic voice search capability will be replaced with Alexa. Just like Fire TV devices in the US, basic voice searching for movies, TV shows, music, and apps will still work on UK and German devices after receiving the Alexa-packed software update. Just now, residents in those countries will be able to talk to Alexa as well, the same way one does with a device like the Amazon Echo.

  12. 16. New Amazon Fire OS coming soon to Fire Tv and Fire Stick Amazon has just updated their Fire TV developer documentation with more specifications for developers to follow to ensure their apps display properly on the upcoming new Fire TV interface. In doing so, they’ve added new screenshots of the upcoming interface which give us our first look at what the new Apps section looks like. The last new shot we have is a look at what a featured video may look like on the device’s Home screen. This image indicates that when a video a is playing, it will cover the static image banner ads and navigation menu that are at the top of the screen. There is a “Learn More” button that presumably takes you the the info screen of the video or app being featured. The 5 navigation dots, which weren’t present in the previous shots of the Home screen, seem to indicate that the large featured banner will slide through several images and/or videos. This new interface will be arriving later this year to all Fire TV devices through a software update. The Amazon Fire TV Stick 2 and Fire TV 2 will receive the new interface first, followed by the 1st-gen Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.
