  2. Beware of Android TV Box Sellers Preloading Devices with Kodi Addons We probably should have reported on this sooner, but recently this issue became a bit more serious. It has been reported that criminal gangs are now in the business of selling preloaded Kodi boxes, and this is bringing legal trouble to the whole Kodi ecosystem. There’s a lot of misinformation that’s been spread throughout the Kodi community, mainly by those by seek to profit from our hard work. We all need to act responsibly in order to ensure the continued existence of our community. We’re going to start by defining the term “box seller” in order to avoid confusion. The term “box seller” refers to someone who is selling Android TV boxes preloaded with Kodi addons. These are the people you’ll find with kiosks in your local shopping mall, at the flea market, on Craigslist, and even on eBay. We’re not referring to legitimate companies like NVIDIA, Xiaomi, Amazon or MINIX, who manufacture quality Android TV boxes, and do not ship with any preinstalled addons. As a consumer, you should be aware that most box sellers out there are not selling the best possible hardware for Kodi. They are selling the boxes that they buy for cheap from China, which they can make the most money off. These cheap Chinese boxes have very high defect rates, and are nowhere near future proof. There’s no reason to pay for low quality hardware, when you can get some of the best brand name Kodi hardware for under $100 anyway. The type of people attracted to selling these type of sketchy products generally aren’t the most honorable nor educated of individuals. We’ve taken notice to the fact that most box sellers out there outright lie to their customers about the reliability of the product, and provide nowhere near the quality of support promised, if there’s any support at all. We get dozens of emails per week asking us for refunds (when we never sold anything to anyone), some box sellers even claim to be associated to us. The first reason we have a problem with these people is because they are bringing the type of legal trouble that could potentially lead to the total downfall of the Kodi community. In terms of legality, there isn’t much trouble that can arise from sharing open source code that allows for the scraping of web content. It becomes a whole other story when you’re bundling it together as a free TV product and selling it as opposed to giving it away for free. We have nothing to do with these people and since they do absolutely nothing positive for the Kodi community, they should feel ashamed for tarnishing the Kodi name. The second reason we have a problem with them is because we’re the ones spending thousands of hours writing and maintaining the addons, meanwhile they are taking what we give away for free and selling it for huge profits. We don’t do what we do so that some low life can go around selling it to people, if those people want to use Kodi or our addons, they should download it for free and install it for themselves, that way they’ll actually be able to maintain their Kodi device in the future. Right now, we end up with pissed off box seller customers coming to our forums and abusing our developers, since they feel they are owed the support they paid for. Lastly, there is the whole paid IPTV thing that box sellers are pushing. These services are plaguing our community, with new ones popping up and shutting down every month. They are trying to turn our community into something it is not, a marketplace. The only reason the Kodi community exists is because of sharing and open source collaboration, charging people money for illegitimate access to streams is not part of that equation. These paid IPTV services have caught the eye (rightfully so) of many broadcasters, with the Kodicommunity being collateral damage. The moral of the story is if you’re going to use Kodi or Kodi addons, please buy Kodi hardware only from legitimate retailers and not from criminals who are going to rip you off. Profiteers are causing us nothing but grief, contributing absolutely nothing to the community, and are bringing the type of trouble that could very well one day lead to the end of Kodi as we know it. Thank You 🙂 And Have A Great Day.

  7. Has the EU Just Outlawed ‘Fully-Loaded’ Kodi Boxes? Android devices with modified Kodi software installed continue to prove popular among the pirating masses. However, a ruling from the EU Court this week will make life more difficult for suppliers. That's the opinion of Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN, who say that sellers will now have to verify if the links contained in such devices are infringing. While millions of people around the globe share files using BitTorrent every day, there are some who prefer to stream their content instead. These users can easily visit any one of thousands of streaming portals via a desktop web browser but for those looking for complete convenience, set-top boxes offer a perfect solution. These devices, often Android-based, regularly come with the Kodi media center already installed. However, Kodi provides no illegal content – custom addons do – and it’s their inclusion in the package that provides users with what they want – free (or cost reduced) movies, TV, and sports. One of the groups trying to crack down on so-called “fully loaded” boxes is Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN. The organization has threatened legal action against several local suppliers and has had one case referred to the European Court. However, a decision in a separate case last week could have big implications for “fully loaded” box supply across Europe, BREIN says. The case, which involved Dutch blog GeenStijl.nl and Playboy, resulted in an important ruling from the European Court of Justice. The Court found that when “hyperlinks are posted for profit, it may be expected that the person who posted such a link should carry out the checks necessary to ensure that the work concerned is not illegally published.” In other words, posting links to infringing content in a commercial environment amounts to a communication to the public, and is therefore illegal. For groups like BREIN, the ruling opens up new avenues for anti-piracy action. For sellers of piracy-capable boxes and related IPTV subscriptions across the EU, trouble could lie in wait. “Copyright protection organization BREIN holds suppliers of IPTV devices responsible for verifying whether their sources for internet TV channels are legal or not. In general, this is not the case,” BREIN said in a statement this week. “Suppliers advertise that when buying their service you do not have to pay separately for pay-channels for films, TV shows, and sports. Such a compilation costs a fraction of the total sum of subscriptions to the individual channels.” BREIN says that following the decision of the European Court of Justice last week, commercial suppliers of IPTV boxes are now obliged to verify whether the sources being linked in their devices are authorized by the content providers. If they are not, the seller could be held liable for infringement. If BREIN’s interpretation of the decision proves correct, sellers of “fully-loaded” Kodi and other IPTV boxes face a minefield of uncertainty. There is absolutely no way vendors can check every single link contained in the software present in the boxes they sell. Furthermore, those links are often updated automatically, meaning that what is legal on the day they are sold might not be legal when the software updates tomorrow. But while it’s certainly possible that BREIN’s take on the decision will prove to be correct, actually enforcing the law against hundreds or even thousands of suppliers is likely to prove impossible. Big suppliers are easily targeted though, which may send out a warning. “BREIN has written letters to suppliers of IPTV subscriptions to warn them that they are required to verify beforehand whether the sources for the IPTV channels they use are legal. If the suppliers are not willing to do so, then BREIN will institute court proceedings,” BREIN says. However, more often that not “fully loaded” boxes are offered for sale on eBay and Amazon by regular people out to make a few bucks. Taking action against every single one is not realistic. But even if all infringing boxes were wiped from sale, that wouldn’t stop people selling blank devices. These can be easily setup by the user to stream all of the latest movies, sports and TV shows with a few clicks, rendering a smart supplier immune from liability. And of course, anyone with VLC Media Player and the ability to Google can find plenty of dedicated IPTV streams available online, without paying anyone a penny The Mixdoctor Moderator of Spartanpixel and Extreme Kodi Testing Check us out too. you can now follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/Kodi_Mixdoctor If we or this forum has helped you please consider donating to keep all videos and forums up to date and active as the server costs are great .. 8. Sale of Kodi 'fully-loaded' streaming boxes faces legal test Special thanks to @cssc0der for bringing this topic to my attention A legal case concerning the sale of video-streaming set-top boxes that can access subscription content for free, begins on Tuesday. So-called "fully-loaded Kodi boxes" have gained popularity, but the legality of their sale is in question. Middlesbrough trader Brian Thompson appeared in court, accused of selling equipment that "facilitated the circumvention" of copyright protection measures. He pleaded not guilty to three offences. The trial has been described as a landmark case by industry watchers. Mr Thompson will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on 27 October. What is Kodi? Kodi is free software designed to bring videos, music, games and photographs together in one easy-to-use application. It began life as a program called Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) that added a feature-rich media player to the original Xbox games console. The open-source project was developed by volunteers and can now be installed on a variety of devices including smartphones and computers. It can also be loaded on to television-connected devices such as the Amazon Fire stick or Apple TV box, although it is not supported by those manufacturers. What are Kodi boxes? Some shops sell ready-to-use set-top boxes or television sticks preloaded with the Kodi software. They are also known as Android boxes, because many of the devices run Android as their primary operating system. The developers behind Kodi say their software does not contain any content of its own and is designed to play legally owned media or content "freely available" on the internet. However, the software can be modified with third-party add-ons that provide access to pirated copies of films and TV series, or provide free access to subscription television channels. Some traders sell Kodi boxes preloaded with such third-party add-ons that can access pirated content. It is the sale of these "fully-loaded" boxes that is the subject of a legal case.
