  4. WHAT TO EXPECT AT APPLE'S MAC EVENT IN OCTOBER Apple is said to be introducing an entirely refreshed lineup of Macs later this month. The event is said to be on October 27th, which we first speculated earlier this month. The new Macs are expected to be available to consumers this month, as well. As is often the case with Apple events, we already know a good portion of what the company has up its sleeve. Read on for a roundup of what to expect… MacBook Air The MacBook Air certainly isn’t expected to be the star of the show this year, but the lineup will receive some attention. It has been reported that Apple will discontinue the 11-inch model in order to direct its attention to the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Air. Some sources, however, have casted doubt as to the likelihood of this happening. While the overall design of the MacBook Air will remain the same, the machines are expected to be updated with USB-C support, according to a new Bloomberg report. As it seems now, however, the display quality will remain the same. The MacBook Air’s display quality is an aspect that many have called for an upgrade to, but seeing that it’s Apple’s entry-level laptop, the company isn’t looking to give it all of the top-of-the-line features. Should the 11-inch MacBook Air get discontinued, it’s possible that Apple will cut the price of the 13-inch model, as Ben speculated this morning. The 12-inch MacBook’s price point could also benefit from the death of the 11-inch Air, too. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air clearly won’t be the focal point of this year’s changes, but some upgrades will occur to bring it up to par. iMac Much like the MacBook Air, the iMac isn’t expected to receive a major overhaul this year, though Apple is planning some under-the-hood changes to keep it somewhat up to date. The biggest change will come to the graphics performance. Apple is said to be planning new options for GPUs from AMD, while other under-the-hood specs will likely also be bumped up. Design and scree specifications are expected to remain the same. The addition of USB-C is also possible. External 5K Display Apple officially discontinued its outdated and overpriced Thunderbolt Display earlier this year, paving the way for a newer and more capable model. It is expected that Apple will introduce a new 5K external display at its event this month that also includes a built-in GPU. We first reported on Apple’s plans for a 5K display with an integrated GPU earlier this year. The display is expected to feature a 5K resolution of 5120 x 2880, while the powerful internal GPU will be able to assist lower-powered Macs in pushing that many pixels. It’s unclear how Apple plans to price its new 5K display, but we should know more following the event next week. Don’t expect it to be cheap, though, given the $1000 price point of the Thunderbolt Display and the addition of a GPU. One thing to note, however, is that the release date for this display has changed several times already, so it’s possible that Apple has indeed pushed it back again and we won’t see it at this year’s event. MacBook Pro The star of the show this month is widely expected to be the MacBook Pro. Apple’s “Pro” laptop hasn’t seen a major overhaul in 4 years and is well overdue for one, and the company certainly seems to have a lot planned for this year’s refresh. First off, let’s talk design. The new MacBook Pro is expected to be much thinner and lighter than the current models, though it’s unlikely that they will feature a wedge design like the MacBook Air and 12-inch MacBook. Nevertheless, the overall footprint of the laptop is expected to smaller, while the trackpad will be slightly bigger. The design changes extend to the port options, as well. The new MacBook Pros will likely ditch all of its traditional ports in favor of USB-C connectivity. MagSafe is also getting the axe this year, as charging can be done via USB-C. The biggest change to the design, however, will be the addition of a new OLED touch display in replace of the standard function keys at the top of the keyboard. This display is expected to provide quick action buttons for common tasks that vary depending on which app is open. Apple is said to be working with third-party app developers to ensure that a variety of software is optimized for the new touch bar at launch, as well. Touch ID is also expected to come to the MacBook Pro this year, likely being located on the power button of the machine. While Auto Unlock allows Apple Watch users to unlock their Mac when their Apple Watch is in close proximity, Touch ID will allow for all users to unlock their machine without typing in the actual password. The MacBook Pro lineup will also get speed boosts under-the-hood. While specifics of the spec upgrades are unclear, Apple is expected to offer one of AMD’s Polaris GPUs and Intel’s Skylake processors. The design of the Polaris GPU is small enough to fit in the smaller footprint of the Pro, while also offering the best combination of power and battery usage. AirPods Another thing we should expect to see at next week’s event is the release of Apple’s truly wireless AirPods, or at least the announcement of an actual release date. At the iPhone 7 event last month, Apple teased that AirPods would be available in late October, but the company has not said anything since. If Apple sticks to its word, then we should expect an AirPods release sooner rather than later. Odds and Ends A refresh of Apple’s AirPort accessories isn’t out of the question for this year’s event. The AirPort Express is still stuck on 802.11n, while the AirPort Extreme and Apple’s Mac lineup have been updated to support the newer and faster 802.11ac. So it seems logical for the AirPort Express to finally receive that update. Colorware’s custom jet black accessories Additionally, it’s possible that Apple introduces new peripherals, such as a new Magic Keyboard with an OLED touch bar. While it’s unlikely, new colors of the peripherals would likely be met with fanfare, such as rose gold, gold, space grey, and jet black. This is speculative, though, and likely won’t be a big portion of Apple’s announcements. Mac Pro/Mac Mini (or what not to expect) The two machines that often feel most neglected by Apple could be headed for the same fate this year. There haven’t been any rumors concerning Apple’s entry-level Mac Mini or its Pro-level Mac Pro. The latter of the two was dramatically overhauled three years ago, but hasn’t seen an update since. The Mac Mini, on the other hand, hasn’t been updated in two years. While minor under-the-hood refreshes aren’t out of the question, it’s unlikely that Apple has anything major planned for the Mac Pro or Mac Mini. Wrap-up It’s clear that the MacBook Pro and external display will be the star of Apple’s October event this year, and rightfully so. Both are due for their respective upgrades and it sounds as if Apple has quite a bit planned for each. HAVE YOU ENTERED THE FORUM GIVE-A-WAY YET? 5. Hands-on with TwelveSouth’s ‘New Mac’ scented candle I’ve long-admired the smell of new Apple hardware. I understand that not everyone gets it, but for those who do, it’s a distinct smell that can be instantly recognized. I first encountered this smell upon purchasing my first ever Apple product – a mid-2000’s Mac mini – and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s not that I go around smelling Apple boxes, but the scent evokes fond memories of my first Mac experience. So when the Apple accessory makers over Twelve South introduced a new Mac-inspired candle, I was intrigued, as those of you who are reading this no doubt are as well. Does Twelve South’s New Mac candle really smell like a freshly opened piece of “Designed by Apple in California?” Twelve South states on the bottom of its candle that the scent is its own interpretation of what new Apple hardware smells like. Upon unboxing the candle, this much is quite obvious; its scent, like any scented candle worth its weight, proceeds it. The New Mac candle is a 100% hand-poured soy wax candle that contains a variety of scent notes in an effort to emulate the new Mac smell. The candle is contained within an opaque, black glass jar with a simple “New Mac” Twelve South sticker on the front. Opening the candle’s lid allows olfaction to completely take over as you’re immediately doused with a bouquet of mint, peach, basil, lavender, mandarin and sage. Mac-scent aside, it’s quite the pleasing smell on its own. The best way I can describe it is “clean” — it puts off a very clean-smelling scent. HANDS-ON VIDEO Twelve South calls its fragrance an interpretation, and after comparing this candle with my just-opened iPhone 7 box, I’d say that’s a fair description. The candle doesn’t smell exactly like new Apple hardware, but I find that it evokes enough redolence to live up to its namesake. Lighting the candle brought out even more of the aroma, but just keeping the lid off is enough to fill a small room or office. The New Mac candle has a burn time of 45-55 hours, although I’m guessing that many of the people interested in this product will be in it more so for the novelty. But even if you do plan on burning it, you can always buy another when it runs out of wax. Twelve South is selling these candles for a reasonable $24, which includes free shipping in the US. Within a day of the initial post all of the initial batch of candles sold out, but stock will be available again soon. What are your thoughts on the New Mac candle? Do you plan on picking one up? 6. Apple files patent application for a better paper bag The legendary tech powerhouse's latest idea apparently is revamping the shopping bag. Enlarge Image Apple's patent application for a recycled paper bag. For Apple, dropping the headphone jack into the dustbin of history was just the start. It would seem that traditional paper bags have made the company's hit list too. According to a Tuesday report, Apple has filed a US patent application for a bag made from the pulp of trees. Now this isn't just ordinary paper pulp mind you. Apple specifically calls for the material of its ideal carryall to consist of 60 percent "post-consumer content." It's certainly a noble goal but not exactly a groundbreaking move. Still, the patent application is definitely more practical than other downright odd filings, of which Sony's wireless wig takes the cake. Of course, Apple is an extremely large corporation and a massive retail operation in its own right. It regularly submits patent paperwork for mundane topics such as fabric with laser-etched words, and afive-axis robotic arm. 7. iOS 10 Lock Screen: A hidden rest-to-unlock setting can ease the pain 0:00 / 0:00 Feel like an idiot every time you try to unlock your iPhone with iOS 10? You're not alone. WSJ's Joanna Stern has a fix. Photo/video: Drew Evans/The Wall Street Journal. It’s been burned into our muscle memories: slide to unlock your iPhone. Then Apple messed it all up last week with the new lock screen in iOS 10. But fear not, you don’t have to feel like a complete idiot every time you try to unlock your phone. First thing, step back and understand the new layout: The password-unlock screen that once lived to the left of the lock screen (swipe left to right), has now been replaced with a widget screen that displays the latest weather, news, etc. To the right of the lock screen is the camera (swipe right to left). To get to the password-unlock screen—or to simply unlock the phone with your fingerprint—press down on the home button. Use this link to watch tutorial video on left of post by clicking HERE That brings us to the second major change: Yes, you need to press firmly down on the home button to unlock the phone with your fingerprint, instead of just resting your finger on it. (This applies to the iPhone 5s and later models.) Turns out, Apple made this change for a good reason. When you rest your fingerprint on the home button, it unlocks the lock screen so you can interact with notifications or widgets with private information. (Watch the padlock at the top of the screen go from locked to unlocked when you rest your finger.) Pressing firmly unlocks the whole phone, taking you to your home screen. So what? You don’t care about that new notification stuff? If you hate pushing down, you can go back to the old no-press approach. In Settings, select General, then Accessibility, then Home Button and flick the “Rest Finger to Open” switch. Just don’t even think about swiping to unlock again. That’s long gone. 8. How to get Kodi on iPhone or iPad (without jailbreaking): Sideload Kodi media player app using Xcode 7 He Everybody, I know this is going to be one of the very main questions hence I am posting a tutorial from a very reputable site in how to do this. I have yet to do it myself so if you want to have a go read below and please post your results Can I get Kodi on my iPhone without jailbreaking it? Yes. It's probably simpler to go down the jailbreaking route, but if for whatever reason you're not willing to do that, there is another method of installing the Kodi app on your unjailbroken iPhone or iPad. We're heavily indebted in this case to a forum user named DanTheMan827, who first posted a tutorial explaining how to install Kodi on your iPhone or iPad without having to jailbreak, and who created the App Signer that is a vital part of the process. How to get Kodi on iPhone or iPad (without jailbreaking): The walkthrough Before we start, you'll need to download three things - they're all free (although you may like to make a donation of some kind to to DanTheMan827 when you download the App Signer), but one of them could take a little while, so sort this first of all. You need the Kodi deb file: download it from here. We used version 15.2.1 in our walkthrough. You also need iOS App Signer - click 'Download r17', then unzip the file. (You may see an advert underneath for a different download but if you hover over the link you'll see it's for something else.) Finally, you need to install Xcode 7 from the Mac App Store if you haven't got it already. (Xcode is free.) Once you've got the first one saved to your desktop, and the others installed on your Mac, we can get started. 1. Plug your iPad or iPhone into your Mac and open Xcode. 2. Select 'Create a new Xcode project'. Make sure Application is highlighted in the iOS section on the left, and then click on Single View Application. Hit Next. 3. In the next dialogue box you need to identify the application you're creating. Fill in Product Name (we'd suggest Kodi) and Organisation Identifier (which should be something unique - I went with com.DavidPrice). The other fields should be filled in already, and you can leave the options as they are. You could choose to make the app specifically iPad or iPhone at this point but we might as well leave it as Universal. Hit Next. 4. On the next box, choose a location for your Git repository. We just saved it on the desktop. Click Create. 5. Don't allow Xcode to access your contacts. Or do, if you want. We said no, but we don't think it makes a difference. 6. In the middle of the Xcode screen you'll see an unobtrusive error message: 'No code signing identities found'. Click Fix Issue underneath this message, then Add… on the next dialogue box. Enter your Apple ID and sign in. 7. Go back to the main screen and you'll see a message: "To fix this issue, select a Development Team to use for provisioning". There should only be one 'Development Team' to choose from, so go ahead and click Choose. Xcode will say it's resolving the issues, and after a short wait everything should be fixed. 8. Open App Signer - just double-click the icon that you saved to your desktop when you unzipped the download. Where it says Input File, you want the Kodi deb file we downloaded earlier: click Browse, find the file on your desktop (or wherever else you saved it) and click Open. Signing Certificate should be filled in already (this should contain your Apple ID); for Provisioning Profile, select the profile with the identifier we set in step 3. New Application ID will be filled in, but we added Kodi as an App Display Name (this is what will appear on your Home screen). Click Start. 9. Choose a file name for the Save As field - again, you can just go with the suggestion, provided you'll be able to remember it - and a location. Click Save. App Signer will unpack the data and save the file; it'll say Done (at the bottom of the tab - you don't get a separate message) when it's finished. 10. We're nearly there. Go back into Xcode and select Window > Devices. Click on your iOS device in the lefthand pane. At the bottom of the righthand pane containing your iPhone or iPad's details - you may have to scroll down to see it - is a small plus sign. Click this. (There's a plus sign at the bottom of the lefthand pane too, and this is more easily visible. But you want the one on the right.) Find and select the .ipa file that iOS App Signer generated in step 9, and click Open. After a short pause while it installs the app (maybe 10-15 seconds in our experience) you'll see the Kodi app listed under Installed Apps. 11. Unplug your iOS device and unlock it. You'll see the Kodi icon in the first available space on your device. Depending on your settings, there's a good chance that you'll get an 'Untrusted Developer' error message when you first tap the icon, and you'll only be able to tap Cancel. So tap Cancel (or just don't try to start the app yet), and instead go to Settings > General, and scroll down to, and tap, Device Management (it's near the bottom of the list). Under DEVELOPER APP, tap on the account you used earlier in the process, then on the next screen, tap Trust "[name of account]". Then tap Trust again. 12. That's it! Go back to the your Home screen and tap the icon to run the app. That's the process as we followed it, and everything worked perfectly for us. 10. INTRODUCTION TO APPLE TEC PART OF FORUM Hi Guys n Girls, Welcome to this new section of our forum, Yes we know it's not quite Kodi related but I can assure you that this will work out to be of interest to those members who own or are interested in Apple Technology. I myself am a certified Apple Tech, working mostly from home developing some Applications that belong in OSX along with testing Hardware and Software for Apple. OK So this section is going to cover a lot of interesting things and articles relating to the good and bad about Apple. I can offer support for most Apple Products so if you have a problem or a question please start your own topic in this section of the forum and I will gladly help you all out to the best of my abilities, I also want our members to also join in the topics on here hence if you also know an answer to a problem someone has posted then please join in and help along as this is your forum and the more members that participate the better our forum grows. I will also be posting relevant news articles in this part of the forum to keep you all up to date in the world of Apple. The only thing I MUST STRESS is please do not ask me to confirm on any leaks that may be out there on the web. Yes if there is a leak out there already on the web then I will no doubt post it in here but I will not confirm if it is true or not There is only one topic I am not able to help with and that is JAIL BREAKING as basically I don't or never had the need to do it as I have access to everything i need via work but by all means if members want to post topics about Jail Breaking then please do so and help other members out as well as I may also learn a thing or 2. So basically anything to do with Apple please post your questions by starting a new thread in this section of our forum and hopefully the results will also help out other members that may have the same problems. One more thing (gosh I am sounding like Tim Cook lol) Please do not ask me to help you via PM (private Massage) as this will not be answered, this is only because no matter how small you may think your problem or comment will be remember by posting in open forums you may also be helping other members that may have the same problem hence why I do not answer problems by PM. Saying that knowing that this is an Apple part of our forum there may be times when no matter what we do or say we can not get your problem solved, if this does occur then knowing the subject is on Apple Products I will presume that you will have FaceTime and Apple Messenger. If this happens and you want one to one help then I will gladly at a time to suite both of us try and solve your problem out over one of these 2 ways of communication. Then obviously details will need to be swapped in private messenger to arrange this. OK I look forward to helping you all out and reading your comments on relevant Apple stories.
