  1. PureVPN Logs Helped FBI Net Alleged Cyberstalker BE WARNED, GOOD STORY BUT THIS VPN KEEPS LOGS A Massachusetts man was arrested late last week on suspicion of conducting a cyberstalking campaign against a female former roommate, her friends, and family. Court documents reveal that logs, obtained by the FBI from privacy service PureVPN, helped the prosecution. Until now, PureVPN had always maintained it carried no logs - almost. Last Thursday, Ryan S. Lin, 24, of Newton, Massachusetts, was arrested on suspicion of conducting “an extensive cyberstalking campaign” against his former roommate, a 24-year-old Massachusetts woman, as well as her family members and friends. According to the Department of Justice, Lin’s “multi-faceted campaign of computer hacking and cyberstalking” began in April 2016 when he began hacking into the victim’s online accounts, obtaining personal photographs, sensitive information about her medical and sexual histories, and other private details. It’s alleged that after obtaining the above material, Lin distributed it to hundreds of others. It’s claimed he created fake online profiles showing the victim’s home address while soliciting sexual activity. This caused men to show up at her home. “Mr. Lin allegedly carried out a relentless cyber stalking campaign against a young woman in a chilling effort to violate her privacy and threaten those around her,” said Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb. “While using anonymizing services and other online tools to avoid attribution, Mr. Lin harassed the victim, her family, friends, co-workers and roommates, and then targeted local schools and institutions in her community. Mr. Lin will now face the consequences of his crimes.” While Lin awaits his ultimate fate (he appeared in U.S. District Court in Boston Friday), the allegation he used anonymization tools to hide himself online but still managed to get caught raises a number of questions. An affidavit submitted by Special Agent Jeffrey Williams in support of the criminal complaint against Lin provides most of the answers. Describing Lin’s actions against the victim as “doxing”, Williams begins by noting that while Lin was the initial aggressor, the fact he made the information so widely available raises the possibility that other people got involved with malicious acts later on. Nevertheless, Lin remains the investigation’s prime suspect. According to the affidavit, Lin is computer savvy having majored in computer science. He allegedly utilized a number of methods to hide his identity and IP address, including TOR, Virtual Private Network (VPN) services and email providers that “do not maintain logs or other records.” But if that genuinely is the case, how was Lin caught? First up, it’s worth noting that plenty of Lin’s aggressive and stalking behaviors towards the victim were demonstrated in a physical sense, offline. In that respect, it appears the authorities already had him as the prime suspect and worked back from there. In one instance, the FBI examined a computer that had been used by Lin at a former workplace. Although Windows had been reinstalled, the FBI managed to find Google Chrome data which indicated Lin had viewed articles about bomb threats he allegedly made. They were also able to determine he’d accessed the victim’s Gmail account and additional data suggested that he’d used a VPN service. “Artifacts indicated that PureVPN, a VPN service that was used repeatedly in the cyberstalking scheme, was installed on the computer,” the affidavit reads. From here the Special Agent’s report reveals that the FBI received cooperation from Hong Kong-based PureVPN. “Significantly, PureVPN was able to determine that their service was accessed by the same customer from two originating IP addresses: the RCN IP address from the home Lin was living in at the time, and the software company where Lin was employed at the time,” the agent’s affidavit reads. Needless to say, while this information will prove useful to the FBI’s prosecution of Lin, it’s also likely to turn into a huge headache for the VPN provider. The company claims zero-logging, which clearly isn’t the case. “PureVPN operates a self-managed VPN network that currently stands at 750+ Servers in 141 Countries. But is this enough to ensure complete security?” the company’s marketing statement reads. “That’s why PureVPN has launched advanced features to add proactive, preventive and complete security. There are no third-parties involved and NO logs of your activities.” PureVPN privacy graphic However, if one drills down into the PureVPN privacy policy proper, one sees the following: Our servers automatically record the time at which you connect to any of our servers. From here on forward, we do not keep any records of anything that could associate any specific activity to a specific user. The time when a successful connection is made with our servers is counted as a ‘connection’ and the total bandwidth used during this connection is called ‘bandwidth’. Connection and bandwidth are kept in record to maintain the quality of our service. This helps us understand the flow of traffic to specific servers so we could optimize them better. This seems to match what the FBI says – almost. While it says it doesn’t log, PureVPN admits to keeping records of when a user connects to the service and for how long. The FBI clearly states that the service also captures the user’s IP address too. In fact, it appears that PureVPN also logged the IP address belonging to another VPN service (WANSecurity) that was allegedly used by Lin to connect to PureVPN. That record also helped to complete another circle of evidence. IP addresses used by Kansas-based WANSecurity and Secure Internet LLC (servers operated by PureVPN) were allegedly used to access Gmail accounts known to be under Lin’s control. Somewhat ironically, this summer Lin took to Twitter to criticize VPN provider IPVanish (which is not involved in the case) over its no-logging claims. “There is no such thing as a VPN that doesn’t keep logs,” Lin said. “If they can limit your connections or track bandwidth usage, they keep logs.” Or, in the case of PureVPN, if they log a connection time and a source IP address, that could be enough to raise the suspicions of the FBI and boost what already appears to be a pretty strong case. If convicted, Lin faces up to five years in prison and three years of supervised release. Thank You And Have A Great Day

  3. 40 TECH GIANTS ASK FOR YOUR HELP IN DAY OF ACTION TO PROTECT NET NEUTRALITY [Video] Video at bottom of post It’s not often that a huge list of tech giants get together to speak with one voice, and it’s even more remarkable when they are protesting legislation which could actually benefit them, but that’s what’s happening today. A Day of Action has been called to ask the FCC to retain net neutrality rules. Amazon, Dropbox, eBay, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Reddit, Snap, Spotify and Twitter are just 11 of the 40 tech companies encouraging you to have your say. Sadly, Apple isn’t among them … Net neutrality means that internet service providers have to treat all websites and Internet services equally. They can’t take payment from some sites, speeding up their traffic, while slowing down traffic to the rest of the web. They also can’t take money from one service to block traffic to a rival one. But under proposed FCC changes, they would be free to do both. You might think the problem is easily circumvented by using a VPN service (I use this one), which means ISPs can’t see which sites you are accessing – but few do this, so there’s a broader issue. Poorer connections to most of the web hampers competition. Imagine a startup wanting to challenge established players but only being able to deliver a poorer service because it can’t afford to bribe ISPs to include it in the fast-track service it offers to the big boys. The end result is less choice for consumers in the services they use. The 40 companies calling on you to support net neutrality are ones that could afford to pay for prioritized traffic, but it’s not a kind of world they want to see – as Google said in a blog post today. Apple has been surprisingly quiet on the issue, though Tim Cook did discuss the topic with German Chancellor Angela Merkel a couple of years ago. You can have your say on the FCC website (click the ‘+ Express’ link). It’s a somewhat formal-looking document, asking for the ‘Name of Filer’ rather than the friendlier ‘Your name,’ but takes just a few minutes to complete. We encourage everyone to do this. Note that you need to confirm your post on a second page. Check out the video for a quick briefing on the problem Thank You And Have A Great Day. The Mixdoctor Team Member of koditalk.org
  4. To Torrent or To Stream? That is The Big Piracy Question When movies and TV shows are so readily accessible via streaming platforms, why would anyone go to the trouble of using a torrent site anymore? It’s an interesting question that raises issues not only for the future of consumer piracy but also for the health of the underlying content ecosystem. As recently as perhaps six years ago, there was no question over where the majority of Internet video pirates would be getting their online fix. Just as they had done for at least as many years before, BitTorrent was the go-to protocol. While still massively popular today to the tune of scores of millions of daily users, torrent consumption has been tempered in recent years by the rise of streaming platforms. These sites, with their glossy indexes and YouTube-like interfaces, grant easy access to a wide range of movies and TV shows, almost as quickly as their torrent counterparts. So why, when these streaming services are so easy to use, would anyone bother with relatively cumbersome torrent downloads? The answer isn’t immediately obvious but for those with intimate experience of both, it’s a pretty serious question. First of all, we have the important question of content ‘ownership’. While people have easy access to the latest movies on streamingmovies123 or whatever .com, users never ‘own’ those streams. They are absolutely transient and once the stop button is pressed, that movie or TV show instance is gone forever. The user downloads the file of course, but it is almost immediately dumped into the ether. For the same download bandwidth expenditure, the user can visit a torrent site and obtain exactly the same content. This time, however, there are two key differences. One, they help to distribute that content among other downloaders and two, they get to keep that content for as long as they choose. Storing content locally is important to many pirates. Not only can that content be played on any device of the users’ choosing, it can also be played offline. Sure, it takes up some drive space, but it doesn’t require streamingmovies123 to stay online to be enjoyed. It can be played again, potentially forever, and certainly long after the streaming site has disappeared, which they often do. But while maintaining control of content rarely has a downside for the consumer, the issue of whether distribution (uploading) via BitTorrent is ‘good’ depends on perspective. Users of streaming sites will correctly argue that with no uploading, they are much safer than their torrenting counterparts. Torrent users, on the other hand, note that their participation in uploading helps to provide content to others. Torrent users are effectively a plus to the piracy ecosystem, while streamers (if we refer to them in torrent terms) are merely leechers. There’s a whole generation of streaming consumers coming through today who literally have no idea about the concept of sharing. They do not understand where the content comes from, nor do they care. This lack of ‘pirate education’ could eventually present a negative for content availability. While we’re on that topic, there’s the important question of how and why pirated content travels through the online ecosystem. There are long-established routes for content from so-called ‘top sites’ to be shifted quickly to torrent sites. Furthermore, torrent sites provide platforms for non-scene P2P releasers to distribute their offerings to the public. In this respect, torrent sites contribute much more to the overall piracy ecosystem than most streaming sites. Also, there’s the not inconsiderable issue of where streaming sites obtain their content. Of course, many people involved in that area of piracy will have either direct or indirect top-site access, but many simply choose to grab their content from either public or private torrents like the average user might. It’s not hard to see who relies on who here. This brings us to how each kind of piracy is perceived by Hollywood interests. It doesn’t take Einstein to reveal that both torrents and streaming are the enemy, but since streaming platforms are closest to legitimate offerings such as Netflix and Amazon, the threat they pose is often portrayed as being the greatest. Indeed, the rise of modified Kodi setups (and the aggressive response to them) seems to support that, with piracy shifting from the relatively geeky torrent environment to the point-and-click living room domain, occupied by the general public. So the question of what is best – torrents or streaming – is largely down to consumer preference. However, for those with an interest in the piracy ecosystem, it’s a question of whether streaming can improve or even survive without torrents, and whether exclusively supporting the former is a potential road to nowhere. Thank You 🙂 And Have A Great Day. The Mixdoctor Team Member of koditalk.org

This is for all users of BT, EE, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media internet service! It seems that these overly protective security settings have made it so that users cannot even access certain completely legitimate sites. Based on what we’ve seen, we would strongly recommend disabling these security settings, regardless of whether you’re a Kodi user or not, if a free and open internet is something that matters to you. Please keep in mind that certain questionable type streaming sites have been blocked from the United Kingdom in general, you’ll need a VPN service to access those sites, it has nothing to do with the issue here. BT Disable Parental Controls Switch Off Smart Setup EE Switch Off Orange Safeguard Sky Switch Off Sky Broadband Shield TalkTalk Switch Off HomeSafe Virgin Media Turn Off Web Safe and Virus Safe We really can’t stress it enough, Kodi users in the United Kingdom really should be using a VPN service in order to get the most out of their experience. The majority of content won’t even show up if you’re in the United Kingdom and not using a VPN service on your Kodi device.
