  13. Mac security researchers have found two separate instances of new macOS malware making the rounds this week, although the Mac exploit scene still remains far behind the sophisticated worms and trojan horses seen on Windows as noted by ArsTechnica. One of the new malware exploits relies on an old Windows technique, exploiting code execution inside Word documents using macros. It is believed to be the first of its kind targeted at the Mac platform. Luckily, it’s easy to avoid in large part because it relies on such an old attack vector … The exploit works by having unsuspecting users open a specially-crafted Word document that includes macros that run when the file is opened. Macros were a prevalent attack vector in the Windows world many years ago and it now seems at least one organization is attempting to use the primitive methods on Mac users. A suspicious Word document is easily identified though. When launched with Microsoft Office (not Pages), a document including macros will prompt the user for permission to execute. Simply pressing ‘Disable Macros’ stops the malicious code from running. If permission is granted, the macros download arbitrary code from a remote server and execute it. This could include key logging, webcam monitoring, fetching browser history and more. In this particular case, researchers found the exploit in a file called ‘U.S. Allies and Rivals Digest Trump’s Victory’ but naturally the subject matter is largely irrelevant. Given how primitive an attack it is, it’s hard to see how many people will be fooled into allowing the macro to do the bad stuff. Even the Office popup recommends the ‘Disable Macro’ option with clear warnings about viruses. However, the exploit makers know they only need a small proportion of people to press ‘Enable Macros’ to make it worth their time. The other instance of malware found this week relied on another classic Windows tactic, faking a common software update dialog which downloads malicious code rather than the genuine application. Researchers show how the MacDownloader virus presents itself as an Adobe Flash Player update. In reality, it harvests user Keychain, phishes for usernames and passwords and collects other private sensitive data it can find. It then sends this data back to a remote location where the malware maker can use it however they please. This attack is more sophisticated than the Word macros case, but still relatively straightforward. It relies on people clicking on a link to update their Flash Player plugin from a website, and then running the downloaded file. To avoid this kind of attack, always check for updates using the system tools (like Software Update) or visiting the plugin site directly. In the modern age we live in, it may be wise to uninstall Flash completely — it’s a very common attack vector. Mac viruses remain a rare occurrence but common sense goes a long way to avoiding this kind of stuff. Never let Word documents from unknown sources run macros and never download updates for software from random websites on the Internet. 16. AirBar converts MacBook models to touchscreen for just $99, starting with 13-inch MacBook Air If you’ve ever wished your MacBook/Air/Pro had a touchscreen, you’ll soon be in luck – at least if you have the 13-inch MacBook Air. AirBar is a plug-and-play infrared device which allows you to use touch on your MacBook Air simply by magnetically attaching the device to the bottom bezel of your screen and plugging it into a USB port. Creator Neonode says that other MacBook models will be supported later in the year … The company already has an AirBar for 15.6-inch Windows laptops ($69), and says that the MacBook Air model will go on sale in March. You can see a video of the AirBar in action below. We’ll be reviewing it as soon as it’s available. 😎The Mixdoctor 😎 Team Member of forum.place & Extreme Kodi Testing ( Check us out too ) You Can Now Follow Me On Twitter https://twitter.com/Kodi_Mixdoctor CHECK OUT OUR LATEST SITE Stream Help http://streamhelp.org If We Or This Forum Has Helped You Please Consider Donating To Keep All Videos And Forums Up To Date And Active As The Server Costs Are Great Remember Click Around The Adverts As This Also Helps Pay For Server Costs Thank You And Have A Great Day 🏵 KODI DISCLAIMER We are not connected to or in any other way affiliated with Kodi, Team Kodi, or the XBMC Foundation. 17. The Apple community has had a hard time being content with the Mac lately. First it was the feeling that the Mac line including MacBook Pros weren’t being updated as often as, say, iPhones. A redesigned MacBook Pro helps resolve that with at least one member of the Mac family. But the new MacBook Pro goes all in on USB-C and drops legacy ports like standard USB-A, and many Mac users believe this move is too aggressive considering the cost attached to this transition. The good news is that Apple is listening and lowering the price of its USB-C adapters in an effort to ease the USB-A to USB-C transition, but you have to act fast… Apple’s lineup of USB-C accessories is changing in price starting now through December 31 with a few exceptions: USB-C to USB Adapter ($19 → $9) Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter ($49 → $29) USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter ($69 → $49) USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter ($69 → $49) USB-C to Lightning (1 m) ($25 → $19) USB-C Charge Cable (2 m) ($19) USB-C to Lightning (2 m) ($35 → $29) 29W USB-C Power Adapter ($49) 61W USB-C Power Adapter ($69) 87W USB-C Power Adapter ($79) While charging accessories are not dropping in price, Apple is discounting third-party USB-C accessories sold through its retail channels, including SanDisk’s $49 USB-C SD card reader which drops to $29. It’s unclear how this will affect sales for adapters that have been made recently, but I would advise following up with customer service if you’ve made a purchase in the last week or two. Apple tells us that this is the reasoning for the change: Third-party companies like Anker, Belkin, and others offer USB-C accessories at competitive prices if you’re looking for cheaper alternatives. Note that Apple’s discount following the new MacBook Pro launch is not permanent. 18. Apple to hold event to unveil new Macs on October 27th in Cupertino Following reports that new Macs are still on track for this month and as predicted, Recode now reports that Apple is planning to hold an event on October 27th to announce its latest lineup, meaning that we’re just over a week away from those long overdue updates… The report cites unnamed sources and claims that the event will take place “at or near” Apple’s Cupertino campus, not in San Francisco where other recent events have been held. Apple declined to comment on the report but some think Apple’s Town Hall might see its swan song for the Mac event. While we’re still waiting for Apple itself to send out invites, it’s all-but-confirmed at this point that a bunch of new Macs are coming this month. Apple will likely send out press invites at some point this week, perhaps as early as tomorrow. Last night’s report claimed that Apple plans to introduce a new MacBook Pro that drops MagSafe and USB-A in favor of all USB-C connectivity. Additionally, the report claimed that Apple will discontinue the 11-inch MacBook Air, which could mean a price cut is coming for the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Air. We discussed what might happen if the 11.6-inch left the lineup but some smart folks think it will stay in the lineup. The new MacBook Pro lineup is expected to feature a new, slimmer design, while the internal specifications will also be upgraded. The new models are also expected to feature an OLED touch bar in place of the traditional function row of keys. Recode’s report corroborates earlier speculation that Apple did in fact move its Q4 earnings call to make room for a Mac event. Apple was originally scheduled to hold its earnings call on October 27th, but later moved the call up to October 25th, leaving many to wonder if the change was due to the scheduling of a press event for Macs. 19. WHAT TO EXPECT AT APPLE'S MAC EVENT IN OCTOBER Apple is said to be introducing an entirely refreshed lineup of Macs later this month. The event is said to be on October 27th, which we first speculated earlier this month. The new Macs are expected to be available to consumers this month, as well. As is often the case with Apple events, we already know a good portion of what the company has up its sleeve. Read on for a roundup of what to expect… MacBook Air The MacBook Air certainly isn’t expected to be the star of the show this year, but the lineup will receive some attention. It has been reported that Apple will discontinue the 11-inch model in order to direct its attention to the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Air. Some sources, however, have casted doubt as to the likelihood of this happening. While the overall design of the MacBook Air will remain the same, the machines are expected to be updated with USB-C support, according to a new Bloomberg report. As it seems now, however, the display quality will remain the same. The MacBook Air’s display quality is an aspect that many have called for an upgrade to, but seeing that it’s Apple’s entry-level laptop, the company isn’t looking to give it all of the top-of-the-line features. Should the 11-inch MacBook Air get discontinued, it’s possible that Apple will cut the price of the 13-inch model, as Ben speculated this morning. The 12-inch MacBook’s price point could also benefit from the death of the 11-inch Air, too. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air clearly won’t be the focal point of this year’s changes, but some upgrades will occur to bring it up to par. iMac Much like the MacBook Air, the iMac isn’t expected to receive a major overhaul this year, though Apple is planning some under-the-hood changes to keep it somewhat up to date. The biggest change will come to the graphics performance. Apple is said to be planning new options for GPUs from AMD, while other under-the-hood specs will likely also be bumped up. Design and scree specifications are expected to remain the same. The addition of USB-C is also possible. External 5K Display Apple officially discontinued its outdated and overpriced Thunderbolt Display earlier this year, paving the way for a newer and more capable model. It is expected that Apple will introduce a new 5K external display at its event this month that also includes a built-in GPU. We first reported on Apple’s plans for a 5K display with an integrated GPU earlier this year. The display is expected to feature a 5K resolution of 5120 x 2880, while the powerful internal GPU will be able to assist lower-powered Macs in pushing that many pixels. It’s unclear how Apple plans to price its new 5K display, but we should know more following the event next week. Don’t expect it to be cheap, though, given the $1000 price point of the Thunderbolt Display and the addition of a GPU. One thing to note, however, is that the release date for this display has changed several times already, so it’s possible that Apple has indeed pushed it back again and we won’t see it at this year’s event. MacBook Pro The star of the show this month is widely expected to be the MacBook Pro. Apple’s “Pro” laptop hasn’t seen a major overhaul in 4 years and is well overdue for one, and the company certainly seems to have a lot planned for this year’s refresh. First off, let’s talk design. The new MacBook Pro is expected to be much thinner and lighter than the current models, though it’s unlikely that they will feature a wedge design like the MacBook Air and 12-inch MacBook. Nevertheless, the overall footprint of the laptop is expected to smaller, while the trackpad will be slightly bigger. The design changes extend to the port options, as well. The new MacBook Pros will likely ditch all of its traditional ports in favor of USB-C connectivity. MagSafe is also getting the axe this year, as charging can be done via USB-C. The biggest change to the design, however, will be the addition of a new OLED touch display in replace of the standard function keys at the top of the keyboard. This display is expected to provide quick action buttons for common tasks that vary depending on which app is open. Apple is said to be working with third-party app developers to ensure that a variety of software is optimized for the new touch bar at launch, as well. Touch ID is also expected to come to the MacBook Pro this year, likely being located on the power button of the machine. While Auto Unlock allows Apple Watch users to unlock their Mac when their Apple Watch is in close proximity, Touch ID will allow for all users to unlock their machine without typing in the actual password. The MacBook Pro lineup will also get speed boosts under-the-hood. While specifics of the spec upgrades are unclear, Apple is expected to offer one of AMD’s Polaris GPUs and Intel’s Skylake processors. The design of the Polaris GPU is small enough to fit in the smaller footprint of the Pro, while also offering the best combination of power and battery usage. AirPods Another thing we should expect to see at next week’s event is the release of Apple’s truly wireless AirPods, or at least the announcement of an actual release date. At the iPhone 7 event last month, Apple teased that AirPods would be available in late October, but the company has not said anything since. If Apple sticks to its word, then we should expect an AirPods release sooner rather than later. Odds and Ends A refresh of Apple’s AirPort accessories isn’t out of the question for this year’s event. The AirPort Express is still stuck on 802.11n, while the AirPort Extreme and Apple’s Mac lineup have been updated to support the newer and faster 802.11ac. So it seems logical for the AirPort Express to finally receive that update. Colorware’s custom jet black accessories Additionally, it’s possible that Apple introduces new peripherals, such as a new Magic Keyboard with an OLED touch bar. While it’s unlikely, new colors of the peripherals would likely be met with fanfare, such as rose gold, gold, space grey, and jet black. This is speculative, though, and likely won’t be a big portion of Apple’s announcements. Mac Pro/Mac Mini (or what not to expect) The two machines that often feel most neglected by Apple could be headed for the same fate this year. There haven’t been any rumors concerning Apple’s entry-level Mac Mini or its Pro-level Mac Pro. The latter of the two was dramatically overhauled three years ago, but hasn’t seen an update since. The Mac Mini, on the other hand, hasn’t been updated in two years. While minor under-the-hood refreshes aren’t out of the question, it’s unlikely that Apple has anything major planned for the Mac Pro or Mac Mini. Wrap-up It’s clear that the MacBook Pro and external display will be the star of Apple’s October event this year, and rightfully so. Both are due for their respective upgrades and it sounds as if Apple has quite a bit planned for each. HAVE YOU ENTERED THE FORUM GIVE-A-WAY YET?
