  3. APPLE will live stream WWDC 2017 keynote on June 5 at 10AM PT Apple is now promoting its upcoming special event on June 5 at 10 am PT with a landing page and a calendar entry on apple.com. Apple’s WWDC 2017 opening keynote, which Apple will live stream, will be the first major event the company has held since last fall after foregoing a spring event this year. Apple first announced WWDC 2017, which is being held in San Jose rather than San Francisco this year, earlier than usual back in February. The early announcement has helped attendees adjust plans while a variety of community events have followed WWDC from San Francisco to San Jose this year. While the venue may be changing, Apple officially confirmed that its major keynote will still be held at 10 am PT on the first Monday of the keynote. 9to5Mac will be covering all the announcements out of the keynote and WWDC 2017 so stay tuned for all the news and analysis. Apple has also added its usual calendar reminder to www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2017/ which adds Apple Special Event to your calendar with a 15 minute alert. The event entry includes this teaser: “Join us for the WWDC keynote presentation and watch every moment live.” WWDC has strictly been a software event in recent years, but this year Apple is expected to introduce new hardware on stage as well. Alongside iOS 11, macOS 10.13, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11, Apple is expected to possibly unveil new MacBooks and MacBook Pros, the first-ever 10.5-inch iPad Pro and a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and the first Siri Speaker which is expected to be an competitor Thank You ? 5. Nasty Mac malware bypasses Gatekeeper, undetectable by most antivirus apps We learned recently that macOS malware grew by 744% last year, though most of it fell into the less-worrying category of adware. However, a newly-discovered piece of malware (via Reddit) falls into the ‘seriously nasty’ category – able to spy on all your Internet usage, including use of secure websites. Security researchers at CheckPoint found something they’ve labelled OSX/Dok, which manages to go undetected by Gatekeeper and stops users doing anything on their Mac until they accept a fake OS X update … NordVPN OSX/Dok does rely on a phishing attack as its initial way in. Victims are sent an email claiming to be from a tax office regarding their income tax return, asking them to open an attached zip file for details. This should, of course, immediately ring alarm-bells: no-one should ever open a zip file they aren’t expecting, even if it seems to be from a known contact. But after that, the approach taken by the malware is extremely clever. It installs itself as a Login Item called AppStore, which means it automatically runs each time the machine is booted. It then waits for a while before presenting a fake macOS update window. This means that literally everything you do on the Internet, even accessing secure servers using https connections, will pass through the attacker’s proxy. A bogus security certificate is also installed, allowing the attacker to impersonate any website without being flagged. The reason Gatekeeper doesn’t block the malware in the first place is that it has a valid developer’s certificate. This should make it easy for Apple to address, by revoking the certificate, but it of course set in motion again if the attackers can gain access to another certificate. Thank You ? And Have A Great Day. The Mixdoctor Team Member of koditalk.org

New Mac malware detected this week

Mac security researchers have found two separate instances of new macOS malware making the rounds this week, although the Mac exploit scene still remains far behind the sophisticated worms and trojan horses seen on Windows as noted by ArsTechnica. One of the new malware exploits relies on an old Windows technique, exploiting code execution inside Word documents using macros. It is believed to be the first of its kind targeted at the Mac platform. Luckily, it’s easy to avoid in large part because it relies on such an old attack vector … The exploit works by having unsuspecting users open a specially-crafted Word document that includes macros that run when the file is opened. Macros were a prevalent attack vector in the Windows world many years ago and it now seems at least one organization is attempting to use the primitive methods on Mac users. A suspicious Word document is easily identified though. When launched with Microsoft Office (not Pages), a document including macros will prompt the user for permission to execute. Simply pressing ‘Disable Macros’ stops the malicious code from running. If permission is granted, the macros download arbitrary code from a remote server and execute it. This could include key logging, webcam monitoring, fetching browser history and more. In this particular case, researchers found the exploit in a file called ‘U.S. Allies and Rivals Digest Trump’s Victory’ but naturally the subject matter is largely irrelevant. Given how primitive an attack it is, it’s hard to see how many people will be fooled into allowing the macro to do the bad stuff. Even the Office popup recommends the ‘Disable Macro’ option with clear warnings about viruses. However, the exploit makers know they only need a small proportion of people to press ‘Enable Macros’ to make it worth their time. The other instance of malware found this week relied on another classic Windows tactic, faking a common software update dialog which downloads malicious code rather than the genuine application. Researchers show how the MacDownloader virus presents itself as an Adobe Flash Player update. In reality, it harvests user Keychain, phishes for usernames and passwords and collects other private sensitive data it can find. It then sends this data back to a remote location where the malware maker can use it however they please. This attack is more sophisticated than the Word macros case, but still relatively straightforward. It relies on people clicking on a link to update their Flash Player plugin from a website, and then running the downloaded file. To avoid this kind of attack, always check for updates using the system tools (like Software Update) or visiting the plugin site directly. In the modern age we live in, it may be wise to uninstall Flash completely — it’s a very common attack vector. Mac viruses remain a rare occurrence but common sense goes a long way to avoiding this kind of stuff. Never let Word documents from unknown sources run macros and never download updates for software from random websites on the Internet. 11. Apple files patent application for a better paper bag The legendary tech powerhouse's latest idea apparently is revamping the shopping bag. Enlarge Image Apple's patent application for a recycled paper bag. For Apple, dropping the headphone jack into the dustbin of history was just the start. It would seem that traditional paper bags have made the company's hit list too. According to a Tuesday report, Apple has filed a US patent application for a bag made from the pulp of trees. Now this isn't just ordinary paper pulp mind you. Apple specifically calls for the material of its ideal carryall to consist of 60 percent "post-consumer content." It's certainly a noble goal but not exactly a groundbreaking move. Still, the patent application is definitely more practical than other downright odd filings, of which Sony's wireless wig takes the cake. Of course, Apple is an extremely large corporation and a massive retail operation in its own right. It regularly submits patent paperwork for mundane topics such as fabric with laser-etched words, and afive-axis robotic arm. 12. How to Create a Bootable Installer of macOS Sierra Before we begin the process of creating the bootable installer, you have a bit of housekeeping to perform. Creating the bootable installer requires that the bootable media (a flash drive or external drive) be formatted, resulting in the erasure of any data the target volume may contain. In addition, the commands to create the bootable installer require the use of Terminal, where a wrongly entered command can cause unexpected issues. In order to avoid any permanent problems, I highly recommend that you perform a backup of both your Mac and the media (USB flash drive or external drive) that you will be using. I cannot overstate the importance of performing these two tasks before you begin the installation process. What You Need A copy of the macOS Sierra installer, available from the Mac App Store. It sometimes takes Apple a little bit of time before the Mac App Store is updated with new releases such as macOS Sierra. If you don't see the operating system available in the store on day one, try perfroming a search for macOS Sierra in the store. The macOS Sierra installer will start up automatically once the download is completed. Do not continue with the installation as prompted by the installer; instead quit the installer. If you allowed the installer to run, you'll need to re-download it, Once it's downloaded, the installer can be found in the/Applications folder, with the name: Install macOS Sierra Public Beta. (This name will be updated as new versions are made available.) A 16 GB or larger USB flash drive. My recommendation is for a USB 3 version of the flash drive, to make the process of reading and writing data on the flash drive faster but a USB 2 will do just as well but will be a bit slower. These instructions will also work for an external drive, however for this guide, I'm going to assume that you're using a USB flash drive. If you're using an external drive, you should be able to adapt the instructions for your needs, where appropriate. A Mac that meets the macOS Sierra minimum requirements. If you have everything, then let's get started. Use Terminal to Create a Bootable macOS Sierra Installer With a copy of the macOS Sierra installer downloaded from the Mac App Store, and a USB flash drive in hand, you're ready to begin the process of creating a bootable macOS Sierra installer. The process we're going to use will completely erase the contents of the USB flash drive, so make sure you have the data on the flash drive backed up, or that you don't care about the loss of any data it may contain. The createinstallmedia Command The key to creating the bootable installer is the use of the createinstallmedia command that is tucked away inside the macOS Sierra installer you downloaded from the Mac App Store. This command takes care of all the heavy lifting for you; it will erase and format the flash drive, then copy the macOS Sierra disk image that's stored within the installer to the flash drive. Finally, it will perform a bit of housekeeping magic, and mark the flash drive as bootable media. The key to using the createinstallmedia command is the Terminal app. By using Terminal, we can invoke this command, sit back and take a short break, and then be presented with a bootable installer that we can use over and over again to install macOS Sierra on as many Macs as we wish. Create the macOS Sierra Bootable Installer Make sure the macOS Sierra installer file you downloaded from the Mac App Store is present in the /Applications folder on your Mac. If it's not there, you can jump back to page 1 of this guide to learn how to re-download the installer. Prepare the USB Flash Drive Connect the USB flash drive to your Mac. If the flash drive isn't already formatted for use with your Mac, you can use Disk Utility to format the flash drive. The flash drive needs to have a unique name for use in the createinstallmedia command we'll be using in a moment. You can use any name you wish, but I’m going to make the following suggestions: Don’t use any unusual characters; keep the name basic, just simple alphanumeric characters. Don’t use any spaces in the name. I highly recommend using the following name: macOSSierraInstall That's the name I used, and it's the name in the command line example, below. By using the same name, you can simply copy/paste the commands into Terminal, without having to make any modifications. Create the Install Media With the flash drive connected to your Mac, launch Terminal, located in /Applications/Utilities. Warning: The following command will erase the contents of the flash drive. Make sure you have a backup of the drive, if needed, before continuing. In the Terminal window that opens, enter the following command. The command is a single line of text, though it may appear as multiple lines in your browser. If you type the command into Terminal, remember the command is case sensitive. If you used a name for the flash drive other than macOSSierraInstall, you'll need to adjust the text in the command line to reflect the different name. The best way to enter the command is to triple-click the line below to select the entire command, copy (command + c) the text to your clipboard, and then paste (command + v) the text into Terminal, next to the command prompt. Once you've entered the command into Terminal, press enter or return on your keyboard. You'll be asked for an administrator password. Enter the password, and press enter or return. Terminal will begin to execute the command, and provide you with status updates as the process unfolds. Most of the time is spent writing the installer image to the flash drive; the time it takes is dependent on how fast the flash drive and interface is. Expect anywhere from a short wait, to enough time for coffee and a snack. Once Terminal completes the task, it will display a line saying Done, and the normal Terminal command prompt will reappear. You can now quit Terminal. The bootable USB flash drive for installing macOS Sierra has been created. Be sure to properly eject the drive if you plan to use it on a different Mac. Or, you can keep it connected to your Mac to start a clean install of macOS Sierra. The bootable installer contains a number of utilities, including Disk Utility and Terminal, that you can use for troubleshooting your Mac if you ever have startup problems.
