THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING Digital Crown for iPhones & iPads

2 posts in this topic

Two further patent applications published today and spotted by Patently Apple show that Apple continues to explore the idea of bringing a Watch-style Digital Crown to the iPad and iPhone. The original patent application was published back in July, and the two additional ones published today further refine the idea.

Apple has generally been moving away from physical controls on iDevices, the iPhone 7 replacing the mechanical Home button with a touch-sensitive one, and the iPhone 8 rumored to be embedding it into the display. We’re also expecting to see a near bezel-free design next year.

It was for this reason that the idea initially seemed unlikely …

I first suggested it in an opinion piece last year – almost a year before the first patent surfaced. I wrote then that it was the experience of using it on the Apple Watch to scroll content that made me wish I had it on the iPhone too.

The Digital Crown was a large part of how Apple got the smartwatch right when others hadn’t yet cracked it. A fundamental problem with a small touchscreen is that touching it covers up much of the content. The Digital Crown overcomes that, allowing us to scroll content without our thumb getting in the way.

But while today’s iPhone screens may be larger than they used to be […] scrolling with a thumb still covers up a chunk of the content. Worse, it’s easy to accidentally tap on targets accidentally, including ads. There have been numerous occasions since using Apple Watch when my thumb started absent-mindedly reaching for the non-existent Digital Crown on my iPhone …

The main refinement in the latest patents is the idea of offering haptic feedback in the rotary control.

This type of sensation can simulate the feeling of the user rotating a mechanical knob against the teeth of an internal gear (e.g., the feeling of a detent when turning a rotary input, such as the “click-click-click” feeling of winding a mechanical watch).

Haptic feedback as described in this patent filing can give the user feedback about the effect of the user’s input on the electronic device, such as changing the zoom-scale of content displayed on the device in response to the user’s rotary input.

Last year, the majority of you rejected the idea of a Digital Crown on an iPhone or iPad, 53% opting for ‘no way’ in our poll.

Why go back in time and use something old when we have a touch screen on the phone?

[…]

Good grief, no! Less moving parts not more!

[…]

The Digital Wheel sticking out like that on the phone can very easily become damaged.

Only 16% definitely wanted it.

The thumbwheel was the best part of the BlackBerry. It all fell apart for them when they removed the thumbwheel.

[…]

A knob is the best controller for a number of things […] Volume knob, scroll knob, zoom knob, lots of contextual uses.

But given one specific concept described by Apple, it would be interesting to see whether views have changed.

The idea is a cube-based user interface in iOS, where turning the Digital Crown would rotate the cube, revealing different types of content. For example, one cube face might contain your normal Home screen, while another might contain apps you use in specific contexts, such as when at work or when travelling. Some people (me included) already organise their apps in this way, but a rotary control would provide another way to switch between them, perhaps then allowing flicking between multiple screens in each category.

Apple also describes using the Digital Crown to control the volume while listening to music, zooming in or out of a photo and resizing text.

Does any of this make the idea seem any more appealing? Or do you still think a rotary control has no place on anything larger than a Watch? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

New Apple Watch Series 3 switching to glass-film
touch display, shipping later this year

A new supplier report out of Asia includes two details that may tell us a little more about the third generation Apple Watch rumored for release later this year. Digitimes points to industry sources in claiming the Apple Watch Series 3 will use a different display technology with shipments starting in the second half of this year.
Specifically, the report cites industry sources in claiming TPK Holding has struggled to profitably produce enough of the displays used by Apple Watch so far (which could also explain inventory constraints).
Digitimes says Apple is instead planning to switch from touch on lens touch panels that use two pieces of glass to a glass-film touch solution from another firm:
The reports mention shipments of the new displays will happen in the latter half of this year, which follows earlier reporting from the supply chain that claimed Apple Watch Series 3 will launch in the third quarter of 2017.

As for what’s being planned for a third-gen Apple Watch, rumors have pointed to a focus on improved battery life which could be needed for cellular connectivity, sleep tracking, or even an always-on display solution.
Apple Watch Series 2 focused on speed, display brightness, GPS without iPhone, and stronger water resistance.

KGI: OLED iPhone 8 to feature ‘revolutionary’
3D-sensing front camera, detects depth for
      games and facial recognition

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 is going to feature a major upgrade to the front camera, according to Apple analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo. A report published today says that the OLED iPhone will include a ‘revolutionary’ front camera and Infrared module that can sense the 3D space in front of it.
The analyst says the new components will be able to merge the depth information with the 2D images from the front camera for applications including face recognition, iris recognition, and 3D selfies …
The analyst says the advanced 3D front camera system could be used in new innovative games that can accurately replace a character’s head with that of the user. The combination of front camera and 3D sensor would allow the iPhone to generate a 3D selfie which could be used in augmented reality.
The hardware will use algorithms developed by PrimeSense, which Apple acquired in 2013. The sensor will apparently be able to detect the location and depth of objects it can see. Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus already includes an immature form of depth detection by including two rear cameras that use their optical parallax offset to determine distance away.
KGI says the 3D sensing front camera for iPhone 8 would be much more advanced using a dedicated Infrared transmitter and receiver. The Infrared transmitter will apparently use vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser technology from Lumentum (as previously rumored), the front camera will be produced by Sony and the IR receiver will be manufactured by Foxconn/Sharp. The 3D system works by sending invisible IR light signals outwards from the phone and then detecting the signals that bounce back off of objects using the 1.4 megapixel IR receiver.
Looking beyond 2017, KGI says next-generation iPhones will likely add 3D sensing rear cameras as well, potentially removing the need for large dual camera iris systems. The analyst says Apple is years ahead of Android platform in terms of 3D algorithms which will make the advanced 3D camera sensor a unique iPhone feature for a couple of years.
The OLED iPhone is expected to be a major upgrade over the current iPhone 7 series in both design and functionality. Moving away from LCD panels, Apple’s upcoming flagship iPhone is rumoured to feature a large 5.8 inch OLED display with 520 PPI in a bezel-less glass design. The Home Button is expected to be replaced by a virtual ‘function area’, leaving about 5.2 inch screen area for application content. Despite the larger screen, the phone is expected to be amount the same size as a 4.7 inch iPhone 7 thanks to space savings by removing almost all bezels.
Other iPhone 8 rumors include the addition of wireless charging, better water resistance, and some form of face recognition biometrics, which may tie in to the latest news of the 3D front camera. The new iPhone 8 has been rumored to cost upwards of $1000.
