THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING Digital Crown for iPhones & iPads

2 posts in this topic

Two further patent applications published today and spotted by Patently Apple show that Apple continues to explore the idea of bringing a Watch-style Digital Crown to the iPad and iPhone. The original patent application was published back in July, and the two additional ones published today further refine the idea.

Apple has generally been moving away from physical controls on iDevices, the iPhone 7 replacing the mechanical Home button with a touch-sensitive one, and the iPhone 8 rumored to be embedding it into the display. We’re also expecting to see a near bezel-free design next year.

It was for this reason that the idea initially seemed unlikely …

I first suggested it in an opinion piece last year – almost a year before the first patent surfaced. I wrote then that it was the experience of using it on the Apple Watch to scroll content that made me wish I had it on the iPhone too.

The Digital Crown was a large part of how Apple got the smartwatch right when others hadn’t yet cracked it. A fundamental problem with a small touchscreen is that touching it covers up much of the content. The Digital Crown overcomes that, allowing us to scroll content without our thumb getting in the way.

But while today’s iPhone screens may be larger than they used to be […] scrolling with a thumb still covers up a chunk of the content. Worse, it’s easy to accidentally tap on targets accidentally, including ads. There have been numerous occasions since using Apple Watch when my thumb started absent-mindedly reaching for the non-existent Digital Crown on my iPhone …

The main refinement in the latest patents is the idea of offering haptic feedback in the rotary control.

This type of sensation can simulate the feeling of the user rotating a mechanical knob against the teeth of an internal gear (e.g., the feeling of a detent when turning a rotary input, such as the “click-click-click” feeling of winding a mechanical watch).

Haptic feedback as described in this patent filing can give the user feedback about the effect of the user’s input on the electronic device, such as changing the zoom-scale of content displayed on the device in response to the user’s rotary input.

Last year, the majority of you rejected the idea of a Digital Crown on an iPhone or iPad, 53% opting for ‘no way’ in our poll.

Why go back in time and use something old when we have a touch screen on the phone?

[…]

Good grief, no! Less moving parts not more!

[…]

The Digital Wheel sticking out like that on the phone can very easily become damaged.

Only 16% definitely wanted it.

The thumbwheel was the best part of the BlackBerry. It all fell apart for them when they removed the thumbwheel.

[…]

A knob is the best controller for a number of things […] Volume knob, scroll knob, zoom knob, lots of contextual uses.

But given one specific concept described by Apple, it would be interesting to see whether views have changed.

The idea is a cube-based user interface in iOS, where turning the Digital Crown would rotate the cube, revealing different types of content. For example, one cube face might contain your normal Home screen, while another might contain apps you use in specific contexts, such as when at work or when travelling. Some people (me included) already organise their apps in this way, but a rotary control would provide another way to switch between them, perhaps then allowing flicking between multiple screens in each category.

Apple also describes using the Digital Crown to control the volume while listening to music, zooming in or out of a photo and resizing text.

Does any of this make the idea seem any more appealing? Or do you still think a rotary control has no place on anything larger than a Watch? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

Apple cuts Tim Cook’s pay by $1.5M as company announces 2017 shareholder meeting

Apple has cut Tim Cook’s 2016 pay by a little over $1.5M after the company failed to achieve both revenue and profit goals. The news that Cook’s compensation was cut from $10.28M in 2015 to $8.75M in 2016 was spotted in a regulatory filing by the WSJ.
Cook wasn’t the only one to lose out …
While Cook saw the largest cut in percentage terms, at 15%, other named execs saw an average 9.6% year-on-year reduction in compensation.
Cook voluntarily opted to receive the majority of his compensation in stock awards closely tied to the company’s financial performance. However, his largest stock award was for remaining CEO for five years, earning him a cool $100M. He later liquidated $65M worth of shares, leaving him with a holding at the time of some $110M.
Cook announced back in 2015 that he would give away almost all of his wealth during the course of his lifetime.
Apple has also confirmed the date of its next shareholder’s meeting, which will take place on February 28 at its Infinite Loop campus.

AirBar converts MacBook models to touchscreen for just $99, starting with 13-inch MacBook Air
If you’ve ever wished your MacBook/Air/Pro had a touchscreen, you’ll soon be in luck – at least if you have the 13-inch MacBook Air. AirBar is a plug-and-play infrared device which allows you to use touch on your MacBook Air simply by magnetically attaching the device to the bottom bezel of your screen and plugging it into a USB port.
Creator Neonode says that other MacBook models will be supported later in the year …

The company already has an AirBar for 15.6-inch Windows laptops ($69), and says that the MacBook Air model will go on sale in March.
You can see a video of the AirBar in action below. We’ll be reviewing it as soon as it’s available.

How to screen share with iOS and macOS to help friends and family with new devices

Over that last month your friends and family have probably purchased or been gifted a range of new devices, and odds may be good that you’re the go-to for tech support. Sometimes it works to problem solve by voice or text message when you aren’t with the user in need, but it’s often better to see what they’re seeing and also have some remote control access. Keep reading after the break for three ways to remotely help others more efficiently.
The cleanest way to see and even control another persons device (outside of paid software like logmein) is if they have a Mac. For options two and three we’ll walk through how to screen share with Macs, iPhones, iPads, and iPods without any third-party software. My favorite trick is using QuickTime on a Mac to screen share an iOS device (skip towards the bottom if you want to do this). However, if they only have iOS devices this first option may be obvious, but is still useful.
      FaceTime
Instead of struggling through a phone call, I often forget to have the other person take a FaceTime call on a secondary iOS device, and point it towards the device they are struggling with. Even though this doesn’t provide the ability to control their device, it still helps you see more quickly what is going wrong. It’s also useful to see how the person needs to adjust how they’re trying to navigate, tap, interact, etc. with their device. I’ve found it’s nice for the other person to have an adjustable stand or tripod to keep the FaceTime device steady and at a good angle. KCOOL’s octopus style tripod is great for portability and flexibility and AmazonBasics Lightweight Tripod is an awesome value for a full size option which pairs well with Ipow’s iPad Tripod Mount Adapter and other accessories.
      Mac to Mac Screen Sharing
Providing support to others can be even smoother when you can take control of their device. When you do Mac to Mac screen sharing this is an option, you can also share your screen instead of seeing theirs. To do this, make sure the ‘Screen Sharing’ box is checked in System Preferences → Sharing. Also, if the Apple ID they use for iCloud and Messages on the Mac is different, you’ll need to have both emails on their contact card. Here are two ways to start screen sharing:
Do a Spotlight search for ‘Screen Sharing’ and launch it.

You’ll then see a dialog box with the option to enter the Apple ID of the person you’d like to screen share with.

On the receiving end they’ll see this invitation.

Make sure they select ‘Control My Screen.’

The alternate way to start screen sharing is through Messages on macOS. Click ‘Details’ in the top right corner of the message of the person you’d like to screen share with and select ‘Invite to share my screen’ or ‘Ask to share screen.’

They will receive the same accept or decline notification as above and also accept your ability to control their screen. Once you are connected a FaceTime voice call will also automatically initiate and you’ll see everything on their screen.
Another useful trick is to open QuickTime Player and start a screen recording (File → New Screen Recording) so they can revisit the guidance anytime they want.

When you’re ready to end the session, you can click ‘Screen Sharing’ next to the  in the menu bar and select ‘Quit Screen Sharing.’

Screen Share iOS devices using Macs
This is a helpful modified use of a developer feature that Apple has built into QuickTime Player that came along with Yosemite. When you use the Screen Sharing Mac app with this screen casting feature option you can see everything happening on an iOS device as long as both parties have Macs.
First, start a screen sharing session. Have the person you’re helping plug in their iOS device via USB cable to the Mac that they are screen sharing with. Lastly, launch QuickTime Player and click ‘File’ and ‘New Movie Recording.’

Once the movie window opens, select the drop down arrow next the record icon and click the iOS device you’d like to see, then click record.

Here is a snapshot of what you’ll see on their Mac as you screen share.
After you’ve solved all their issues, you can even help them save the footage so they can review it later and remember the solution again in the future.

      🎅🎄HAPPY HOLIDAYS🎄🎅
